Sleeping Bear Dunes Is The Nearest You Will Get To Heaven Without Leaving Planet Earth
Sleeping Bear Dunes attracts tourists from all over the world with many of them becoming repeat visitors. It is not surprising why so many people come back after their first visit when you see the beauty and attractions that are on offer.
There are many popular tourist destinations around the world, Las Vegas, London, and New York, but none of them compare to Sleeping Bear Dunes with over 50,000 acres of amazing scenery. However, Sleeping Bear Dunes was not always a popular tourist attraction. Up until 2011, not many people from outside the area knew about Sleep Bear Dunes and the amazing things that were on offer.
Thanks to the viewers of Good Morning America who voted Sleeping Bear Dunes as the most Beautiful Place in America, this magical place was put on the map. From a closely guarded secret, the broadcast turned Sleeping Bear Dunes into a tourist hot spot with over 1.5 million visitors. With 35 miles of beautiful coastline that looks like something out of a dream movie, it is no wonder why more people choose to leave behind their normal holiday destination and travel to Sleeping Bear Dunes.
With no much to offer, Sleeping Bear Dunes attracts different types of holidaymakers, from the person who loves to relax on the beach, to people who love to hike the trails and enjoy the wildlife. This magical destination also attracts newlyweds from around the world who want to have an amazing honeymoon and enjoy the long walks along the Lake Michigan shoreline with the romantic sunsets.

TRAVERSE CITY – Even though it’s half an hour away from Traverse City, local residents feel a special love for the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It’s almost always the first local attraction they recommend to visitors, and it’s the theme of a new informational exhibit – “Find OUR Park: Sleeping Bear Dunes” – now showing at the Traverse City Visitor Center.
The display, which runs until Aug. 31, is a local improvisation on the nationwide “Find Your Park” campaign introduced this year to celebrate the 100th birthday of the National Park Service.
“Find Your Park invites the public to see that a national park can be more than a place – it can be a feeling, a state of mind, or a sense of American pride,” says Sleeping Bear’s Gary Vanderziel.
A breathtaking 64-mile curve of beaches, coves, islands and hills along the west coast of the Leelanau Peninsula, the Sleeping Bear Dunes have been part of the national park system since 1972. In 2011, viewers of Good Morning America voted it the Most Beautiful Place in America.
In addition to high-quality photos of the park’s many scenic highlights and a streaming video hosted by deputy park superintendent Tom Ulrich, the exhibit includes maps, and information about trails, family activities, late-night “star parties” with park astronomers, and the popular Junior Ranger program, as well as exhibits of plants, bird, animals and rocks that can be found in the National Lakeshore.
The exhibit can be viewed Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 6 pm and Sundays from 11 am to 3 pm. Located at 101 W. Grandview Parkway, at the north end of Union Street, the Visitor Center is operated by the Traverse City Convention & Visitors Bureau Education Foundation and is available for visitors and area residents alike.
